Portrait of Mr John Davies

John Davies attended Bishop Gore School, Swansea and studied medicine at St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical School, London. During his undergraduate training he attained a BSc (Hons) degree in Pharmacology before graduation with M.B.,B.S following which he commenced his surgical training.

He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeon’s of Edinburgh in 1985 and undertook a research fellowship at The Royal Marsden Hospital and Institute of Cancer Research, London between 1998 and 1990. His research involved the development of novel agents for the treatment of advanced prostate cancer. During this period he also collaborated with The University of Maryland and spent three months at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore and then M.D. Anderson Cancer Centre in Houston Texas. He attained expertise at these centres in Radical Nerve Sparing Prostatectomy and the management of locally advanced prostate cancer in cryo-surgery. He obtained Specialist accreditation in Urology in 1992.

He was appointed Consultant Urological Surgeon at The Royal Surrey County Hospital in 1993. He introduced Radical prostatectomy and Laser prostate surgical techniques to the hospital in association with The St Luke’s Cancer Centre in Guildford. He also introduced the nurse specialist practitioner role in association with the University of Surrey. In 1998, in collaboration with American colleagues from New York and Los Angeles the technique of cryo-surgical ablation for locally advanced and recurrent prostate cancer post radiotherapy was introduced in Guildford. He has a national and international referral base for this technique and many UK surgeons have attended to be trained in this surgical technique. Plans are underway to introduce kidney cryosurgery and High Intensity Focussed Ultrasound (HiFu) for prostate cancer.

He is a tutor on the Endoscopic Surgical training course at The Royal College of Surgeons, London and also lectures at The Institute of Urology Post Graduate Urology Course based at The Middlesex Hospital. He was lead clinician in Urology 1997 to 2002.

Since 2000 he has co-ordinated an active research programme in cryo-surgical treatment for prostate cancer. In 2003 a Research Fellow was appointed in association with The University of Surrey. This programme is on going and the second research fellow is due to be appointed in September 2005.

He is the co-founder of The Prostate Project Charity (1999) an organisation which aids prostate cancer detection awareness based at The Royal Surrey County Hospital and St Luke’s Cancer Centre. The charity incorporated Frimley Park Hospital in 2003 and plans to incorporate The East Surrey Hospital Redhill and the North Hampshire Hospital Basingstoke. The charity to date has raised over £700,000. In 2004 The Prostate Project Foundation Group was formed to support a Chair in Uro-oncology in association with The Post Graduate Medical School in Guildford. This has successfully raised over £500,000 towards this project. It is envisaged that the Chair will commence September 2005.

His leisure interests include Classic Cars and hopes to qualify as a helicopter pilot in 2005. He is married with two children aged 12 and 14. His wife, Janet, is a local magistrate.
